Ohrid sits on the shore of one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, with a hillside old town, Byzantine churches and a medieval fortress above the water. The town and the lake are a UNESCO World Heritage site for both their nature and their culture. From Skopje the drive runs west through Tetovo, Gostivar and Kičevo, about two and a half to three hours each way.
Is Ohrid worth a day trip from Skopje?
Yes — if you go early and accept a long day. You will spend around five to six hours driving in total and five to six hours in Ohrid, which is enough for the old town, the famous church at Kaneo, the fortress and lunch by the water. If you can, stay a night or two instead: the lake is at its best at sunset and early morning, and the next day you can add St. Naum, a swim or a boat trip. We do both — round-trip day tours and one-way transfers.
What to see in one day
Church of St. John at Kaneo
The small 13th-century church on a cliff above the lake is the most photographed view in the country. Walk there through the old town, or take one of the small boats from the harbour and walk back along the lakeside boardwalk.
Old town, Samuel's Fortress and Plaošnik
The old town climbs the hill in narrow cobbled lanes. At the top, Samuel's Fortress has wide views over the lake, and just below it Plaošnik is where St. Clement taught in the 9th century — the rebuilt church of St. Clement and St. Panteleimon stands among early Christian mosaics.
St. Sophia and the Ancient Theatre
The 11th-century Church of St. Sophia holds some of the finest medieval frescoes in the Balkans. A few minutes away, the Hellenistic Ancient Theatre is still used for concerts during the Ohrid Summer Festival.
St. Naum and the Bay of Bones (if you have time)
The monastery of St. Naum is about 30 km south, near the Albanian border, beside crystal-clear springs you can explore by rowing boat. On the way, the Bay of Bones is a reconstructed prehistoric village on stilts over the water. Together they add about two to three hours — easier on an overnight stay.

Local tips from our drivers
- Start by 07:00. The road takes two and a half to three hours each way, and an early start gives you the quiet morning light in the old town.
- Take a boat to Kaneo. Small boats leave from the harbour; ride there and walk back along the boardwalk — it saves the steepest climb.
- Wear proper shoes. The old town is steep and cobbled, and the stones are slippery when polished by summer crowds.
- Carry some denars. Several churches charge a small entrance fee, and not all of them take cards.
- Pick your season. May, June and September are ideal. July and August are hot and busy; winter is peaceful, but many lakeside places close.
- Consider staying the night. A one-way transfer from Skopje is from €125, and sunset at Kaneo is worth it.
