Bitola, Heraclea & Krushevo from Skopje

An elegant old consular city, a Macedonian-Roman city founded by Philip II, and a mountain town that once declared its own republic — southern Macedonia in one long day from Skopje.

~175 km to Bitola ~2.5 h 4th century BC Heraclea Krushevo at ~1,350 m

Bitola is the country's second city and its most elegant: in Ottoman times so many foreign consulates opened here that it became known as the "city of consuls". Just outside town lie the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis, and an hour to the north, Krushevo sits high in the mountains. Together they make a rich, long day out from Skopje — or an easy trip from Ohrid, which is only about an hour from Bitola.

Bitola: the city of consuls

The heart of Bitola is Širok Sokak, a long pedestrian street lined with pastel 19th-century houses and cafés — where the whole town strolls in the evening. Around it you'll find the Clock Tower, the old bazaar and Ottoman mosques, all within a short walk.

Heraclea Lyncestis

A couple of kilometres south of the centre, this ancient city was founded by Philip II of Macedon, father of Alexander the Great, in the 4th century BC, and later flourished under Rome. Walk among the columns, the Roman theatre and the early Christian basilicas, whose floor mosaics of animals and trees are among the finest in the region.

Krushevo: the highest town

At around 1,350 m, Krushevo is the highest town in Macedonia. In 1903, during the Ilinden Uprising, its people declared the short-lived Krushevo Republic, remembered at the striking Makedonium monument above the town. Krushevo is also the hometown of the much-loved singer Toše Proeski, whose memorial house is a place of pilgrimage for fans, and its slopes are popular for paragliding.

Pelister and Stobi

With more time, drive up into Pelister National Park above Bitola, known for its Molika pine forests and mountain lakes. On the way south from Skopje, the ancient city of Stobi can be added as a short stop.

Local tips from our drivers

  • Start early. It is a long loop — around five hours of driving in total.
  • Bring cash for Heraclea. The site has a small entrance fee, best paid in denars.
  • Mosaics can be covered in winter. Some floor mosaics are protected outside the summer season; ask before you go if they are your main reason to visit.
  • Krushevo is cool and windy. Bring a jacket, even when Bitola is warm.
  • Stay for the evening walk. If you overnight in Bitola, Širok Sokak at dusk is the town at its best.
  • Staying in Ohrid? Bitola is only about an hour away — an easy half-day trip from the lake.
